15 vs 30 vs 60 Seconds: How Script Structure Changes by Length (With Templates)

The most common short-form scripting mistake is treating length as a dial instead of a format. Creators write a 60-second script, trim it to 30, and wonder why it feels gutted. Or stretch a 15-second idea to 60 and wonder why retention collapses at second 20.
Each length is its own format, with its own structure, pacing, and job. Here's how they differ, with a fill-in template for each.
The core difference: how many ideas fit
- 15 seconds: one idea, zero development. A single punch. Setup and payoff, nothing between.
- 30 seconds: one idea, one development. Claim, then proof or steps, then button.
- 60 seconds: one idea, full arc. Context, escalation, payoff, close. Still one idea. The length that fits three ideas is called three videos.
Write that on a sticky note: length changes development, never idea count.
The 15-second script
Job: pattern interrupt, rewatchable, loopable. This is the format for hooks-as-content: one surprising fact, one before/after, one hot take.
Template:
[0-2s] Hook, which is also the premise: "[Surprising claim or question]" [2-11s] The single payoff: "[The fact, the reveal, the demonstration. No preamble, no 'so basically'.]" [11-15s] Button: "[One-line kicker that recontextualizes the payoff, or loops into the opening line]"
The loop matters more here than anywhere: if your last line flows into your first, rewatches climb, and rewatches are rocket fuel at this length.
Kill on sight: any sentence that explains why you're about to say something. At 15 seconds, throat-clearing is 20% of your runtime.
The 30-second script
Job: the workhorse. Tips, mini-tutorials, single-point arguments, one-example stories. Most niches should default here.
Template:
[0-3s] Hook: "[Name the viewer or open the gap]" [3-7s] Context, one sentence: "[Why this matters or what's at stake]" [7-24s] Development, 2-3 beats: "[Steps, reasons, or story beats. Strongest beat FIRST, not last: viewers leave continuously and your best material shouldn't be behind the most attrition]" [24-30s] Close: "[Takeaway in one line + one specific next action or loop]"
Kill on sight: the recap. "So remember, the three steps are..." Nobody stays for a summary of a video they just watched.
The 60-second script
Job: stories, contrarian arguments that need evidence, transformations, anything where tension needs time to build. Highest ceiling, hardest to hold.
Template:
[0-3s] Hook: "[Biggest possible gap you can honestly open]" [3-10s] Stakes: "[Why this matters, what it costs, or where the story starts]" [10-25s] First escalation: "[The attempt, the first reason, the twist setup]" [25-40s] Second escalation: "[Raise it: the failure, the stronger reason, the twist]" [40-52s] Payoff: "[The resolution the hook promised, delivered plainly]" [52-60s] Close: "[Meaning in one sentence, then CTA or loop]"
The escalation beats are the format's skeleton. Sixty seconds with no mid-video "wait, what?" moment is a 30-second video wearing a coat.
Kill on sight: starting the story before the hook. "So last Tuesday I was..." is a swipe. Open the gap first, then earn the backstory.
How to choose length for an idea
Ask one question: how much resistance does the payoff need to overcome?
- Instantly believable and delightful → 15s
- Believable once you show two steps or one proof → 30s
- Contrarian, emotional, or transformation-shaped → 60s
If you're unsure, script the 30 and see if it strains at either seam.
Using these with AI
These templates are exactly the kind of structure AI executes brilliantly when told. "Write a 30-second script" produces mush; "write a 30-second script: 3s hook, one-line context, 3 beats strongest-first, close with a loop, in my voice" produces a draft you can film.
In Kreate Club, the duration and style options bake these skeletons in, so "script this at 30 seconds" means this 30-second structure, generated in your voice profile rather than the model's default. Pair with the hook formula list for the 0-3 second slot, and the blank page problem is fully surrounded.
