The Real Cost of AI Content Tools in 2026 (Credit Math Nobody Shows You)

Here's a fun exercise: go to the pricing page of any AI content tool and try to answer one question. "If I script 15 videos a month from 30 research videos, will the credits last?"
You almost never can. You'll find "2,000 credits per month" in large type, and what an action costs in credits somewhere between the FAQ and nowhere. Then, around the 20th of the month, you find out empirically.
We build Kreate Club, and transparent credits are one of our core bets, so this post is partly self-serving. But the underlying economics are the same for every tool in the category, ours included, and once you understand them the pricing pages get much easier to read.
Why credits exist at all
AI tools have a real marginal cost per action. Every transcript fetched, every script generated, every voice profile built is an API call to a model provider, billed per token. Published model prices work out to fractions of a cent for a short script on an efficient model, more for premium models, and more again for long inputs like full video transcripts.
Flat "unlimited" pricing therefore has a problem: a small fraction of heavy users can cost more than their subscription. Credits are the honest fix. The dishonest part is when tools use credit opacity to make plans look bigger than they are.
The three tricks to watch for
1. The big-number plan. "2,000 credits!" means nothing without an exchange rate. If a script costs 40 credits, that's 50 scripts. If it costs 4, it's 500. A pricing page that shows the pool but not the price per action is choosing to keep you from doing the division.
2. Input-dependent costs. Actions that consume long inputs (analyzing a 20-minute video, chatting across ten sources) cost the provider much more than short ones. Some tools charge these at flat rates and quietly rate-limit heavy users; others burn credits proportionally without telling you the multiplier. Either way, repurposers and researchers, the users this category exists for, hit the wall first.
3. Credit inflation over time. Costs per action can change after you subscribe. Nothing forces a tool to publish a changelog for credit prices. If the tool doesn't show you the cost before each action, you won't notice the change; you'll just run out sooner.
The math you should actually run
Before subscribing to anything, estimate your month in actions:
| Your activity | Typical actions |
|---|---|
| Research: adding videos to analyze | 1 action per video added |
| Scripting: generating or regenerating | 1 to 2 actions per finished script |
| Repurposing: turning one piece into others | 1 action per output |
| Voice or style setup | a handful, once |
A creator posting 3 videos a week from ~8 research videos runs maybe 60 to 90 actions a month. Now ask the tool's pricing page: what does each of those cost in credits, and does the monthly pool cover it with headroom? If you can't answer from the pricing page alone, that's your answer about the company.
How we do it (the self-serving part, clearly labeled)
Kreate Club shows the credit cost of every action on the button before you click it, and the ledger after. Adding a video shows its cost. Generating a script shows its cost. Building a voice profile costs 1 credit per source video and says so. Your balance is always one glance away, and nothing spends credits invisibly.
We also debit most actions only when they complete. A failed transcript or a generation that errors out isn't your problem to pay for.
This isn't altruism; it's positioning. The market leader in our category charges $399 a year upfront with a 2,000-credit pool whose per-action costs users discover by running out, and "credit clarity" is one of its most-cited complaints. Being the transparent one is good business precisely because it's rare. (More on that comparison in our Poppy AI alternatives breakdown.)
The takeaway
Credits aren't a scam; they're the honest shape of real API costs. Opacity is the scam. Judge every AI tool with one test: can you compute your month's cost from the pricing page alone, before paying?
If yes, whatever the number is, you can trust it. If no, the number is whatever they need it to be.
